is there possibly any Macey lore? like anything you've written down about her even if it's old and cringe, I LOVE her design and vibe
okay so idk where her story is but basically i used to write a lot of creepypastas that started out as jokes and then id make them incredibly fleshed out because i have a weird sense of humor. she started out because i misheard something as "shirley bean" and i thought thatd be a funny name so i was like okay ill make a creepypasta oc named shirley bean. this then turned into shirley bean, the perfect rich girl with a dream life, who gets hit by a car and suffers a traumatic brain injury (hence the huge road rash scar on her forehead) that makes her lose her sense of identity and become extremely deadpan and apathetic to everything as she realizes that everything in her life is superficial and doesnt matter and then she kills everyone she cared about and gives herself a terrible haircut to show off her scar and runs away and changes her name to macey gardens. her whole deal is that she doesnt gaf about anyone or anything including herself and i remember the only hobby she really had was making weird scary dolls. she also uses she/it

Cammie: [Assigning jobs] There is also some gardening, mowing a lawn, etc. This will require a bit of muscle so... you should take that one, Bex.
Zach: No, I should do that one! It's a man's job, Cammie. I am a man.
Macey: That’s debatable.
Zach: Well I’m more of a man than Bex.
Bex: I do not accept that.

🖋️🖋️🖋️🖋️🖋️share with the classss bestie
meet NOBLE DIAMONDI from GREETINGS FROM THE GREY GARDENS:
"Oh, scales and stones. Why are you here?" the apothecarist hissed.
"There was no mention of an interview component in the Help Wanted advert, but alright, I'm game," Noble shoved the neatest, most important looking stack of documents onto the floor and promptly seating himself in their place. He tapped a single gloved finger against his chin with a thoughtful hmm, the edge of his scarred mouth twitching upward at the apothecarist's incensed glare. "Well, in the general sense, I guess I'm here to get rich, raise hell, and look good doing it -- while doing whatever it is you do at apothecarists' and whatnot."
"A street twat like you ain't interviewin' for shit," the apothecarist snarled through gritted teeth, his hand inching not-so-subtly toward a suspiciously dangerous object tucked into his belt. "Why's the real reason you're in my fuckin' shop fuckin' afterhours?"
"Ooooh, right, of course!" Noble chirped. He clapped twice. The white powder on his gloves ignited in a flurry of pale smoke, solidifying into his trusty saber. "Silly me. In the specific sense, Mr. Macey, I am here to stab stab stab you until you die. Any other questions?"
noble is... a real, genuine shithead, but he's ~fun~!
sixty years ago, a pandemic in his world caused 1% of the population to develop a condition that slowly turns them to carcinogenic stone, but before they die horrific deaths the dust from their bodies gives them odd abilities and a fluctuating connection to all mineral matter; thus, the nickname "dusters".
noble is a thespian-turned-duster who is less interested in finding a cure than he is interested in figuring out a way to ruin and/or kill a reclusive entertainment reviewer who trashed his latest show. he is, obviously, a charming asshole with a flair for the dramatics, who has a bad habit of causing problems everywhere he goes -- which is why he is also on the run from the grey gardeners, a medical militia intent on hunting down dusters, studying their guts, then summarily executing them in the name of national security. fun times!

Where do you think the Zammie wedding happened?
Hi friend!
I’m actually not sure where I think the Zammie wedding happened. Part of me thought they would do it at the mansion seeing as how that’s where they got close and that’s where Zach first kissed Cammie.
Maybe it happened somewhere close to the mansion. But maybe it was somewhere else like the botanical gardens or something. All I know is that Macey was definitely in charge of it all and she wanted everything to be absolutely perfect.
You can find more on this in the Zammie Wedding section of my Masterlist :)

Helga had a lot on her mind when she went to bed that evening. She didn't want to add stress for Vincent, but she would need to tell him what happened this afternoon. He was exhausted and had fallen into a deep sleep, so now was not the time. He didn't know that Jillian had brought Macey home from school. How would he feel if he had to look his ex-wife's daughter in the eyes? Would that bring back the hurt from all those years ago? But she couldn't dwell on that, they had bigger problems...
Ross White was an enigma. He used to be just a pushy co-worker, womanising-cad who came sniffing at her skirts, but now... What was he up to now? She rubbed her temples as she went through the events that transpired,
She had just put Emma down for a nap, when she spotted movement through her bedroom window. From the second story, she had a good view of the back garden. Ross was walking around the house, looking into the livingroom room and kitchen windows. "What the...?" She went downstairs and as she approached the front door, she stopped in her tracks. That Phoebe woman was standing outside the front door. The last time she saw her, was when her wallet mysteriously disappeared. She hunkered down behind the dining room table. Perhaps if she pretended that no one was home, they would leave. Then, she heard it... The school bus. "Nooo", she whispered. She would have to open the door now.
"Hi there, how are you guys?" She tried to sound causal when she opened the door. She cut Ross off, when he tried to respond. "As you can see the kids are beck and they have friends over, so it isn't the best time." " Don't worry Honey, we won't be long", Ross smiled and pushed past to the front door followed by Phoebe who looked a bit pregnant again. Ross kept her busy with nonsensical talk, while Phoebe used the bathroom. "Nice place you've got here", she yelled out from the guest bathroom. "Thanks", Helga called back, trying her best not to sound too irritated. " I am sorry for not offering you anything, but I must ask you guys to go. I have a house full of visitors, whose parents would expect me to keep a proper eye on them and a sleeping toddler upstairs", she finally said, getting up from the couch to prove her point. " We can help you", Phoebe said with a grin. "3 pairs of eyes will be dandy ", they didn't get up from the couch. "I am also expecting other visitors and I am afraid I just can't handle it all. Please go." Phoebe and Ross exchanged glances. Helga didn't miss the evil look in Phoebe's cold eyes. "Well ok then", Ross said making a face. "We don't want to overstay our welcome." As they were about to leave, Phoebe turned to Helga. " Don't get too comfy, Sweety. We will be back soon."
That final statement haunted Helga. Something was terribly wrong and it left Helga stone cold thinking of it. What were they up to? It couldn't be anything good.

Presenting my piece for the Carry On Art Remix!
I chose to remix this lovely and heartbreaking piece of a young Simon being comforted by Lucy's ghost by @yellobb. The caption for the original was (ironically) about not thinking about Simon growing up in care without the love he deserved. I really wanted to take those instructions literally, so I remixed the concept into an AU where he didn't because Lucy never left him.
Here's Simon, age 3, with his mama, hanging out in his grandmother's garden on a lovely summer's day. GETTING THE LOVE HE DESERVES.
Please do click for quality (and so you can zoom in and see their matching freckles.)
Thanks to Macey for allowing me to remix her art, @ivelovedhimthroughworse for the beta help on Lucy's hair colour, and of course to the @coartremix for organizing this fest!

Please please please give me more Richey book recs! Especially with suicide as a theme, but if you know of any others, I would love to hear about them too! Thank you for being a fountain of a Manic knowledge and sharing it with us <3
Here's two lists! List one is stuff Richey definitely read, as in it's something he mentioned or referenced in lyrics/interviews/album booklet or setlist quotes/etc. List two is stuff that I can extrapolate he likely read, due to the things I know he did read. Note that a fair amount of these come with various trigger warnings. Again, I've read most but not all of these, so I can answer questions about a good number of them.
Oh, also, this totally slipped my mind from the last list somehow. The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides was definitely a book Richey read; the Manics use a quote from the film version (which came out after Richey's death but they said in an interview they thought he'd have liked it) at the end of Doors Closing Slowly.
Definitely read: -Catcher In The Rye by JD Salinger -American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis -The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides -The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart -1984 by George Orwell -Confessions Of A Mask by Yukio Mishima -The Plague, The Stranger, and The Fall, all by Albert Camus -A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams -Lipstick Traces by Greil Marcus -The Birth of Tragedy by Friedrich Nietzsche -The Torture Garden by Octave Mirbeau -Borstal Boy by Brendan Behan -The Divided Self by RD Laing -Notes From Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky -Novel With Cocaine by M Ageyev -Bernice Bobs Her Hair by F. Scott Fitzgerald -Black Rain by Masuji Ibuse -Under The Volcano by Malcolm Lowry -Frisk by Dennis Cooper -Bartleby The Scrivener by Herman Melville -Homage To Catalonia by George Orwell -Heart Of Darkness by Joseph Conrad (which is what Apocalypse Now was based on, and the film was one of Richey’s major obsessions at the end of his life) -Brave New World by Aldous Huxley -Rumblefish by SE Hinton -Being And Nothingness by Jean Paul Sartre -Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z Brite -The Atrocity Exhibition by JG Ballard -High Rise by JG Ballard -Birdy by William Wharton -The Trial by Franz Kafka -Suddenly Last Summer by Tennessee Williams -Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov -The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin -The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon -Lord of the Flies by William Golding -Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis -One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey -Birdy by William Wharton -Thirst For Love by Yukio Mishima -Miracle Of The Rose by Jean Genet -The Drowned And The Saved/So This Is A Man/Escape From Auschwitz, all by Primo Levi -The Diary Of A Young Girl by Anne Frank -Last Exit To Brooklyn by Hubert Selby Jr -The Loneliness of a Long-Distance Runner by Alan Sillitoe -Four Quartets by Hart Crane -The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri -The Pursuit Of Loneliness by Philip Slater -Society Of The Spectacle by Guy Debord -The Naked And The Dead by Norman Mailer -Man’s Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl -Illuminations by Arthur Rimbaud -Dialectic Of Enlightenment and Minima Moralia by Theodore Adorno -The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan -One Day In The Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn -The Hero With A Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell -Naomi by Junchiro Tanizaki -SCUM Manifesto by Valerie Solanas -The Lives Of Michel Foucault by David Macey -Rethinking Camelot by Noam Chomsky -The Anxiety Of Influence by Harold Bloom -The Unrest Cure And Other Stories by Saki (HH Munro) -King Lear by William Shakespeare -Confessions by Saint Augustine -The Day Of The Locust by Nathaniel West -Tom Jones by Henry Fielding -Bird Man: The Many Faces Of Robert Stroud by Jolene Babyak -The Demon by Hubert Selby Jr -The Waste Land by TS Eliot -Songs Of Innocence And Experience by William Blake
Likely read: -The Outsiders by SE Hinton -Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury -Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf (features a suicidal main-ish character) -Post Office by Charles Bukowski -The Prophet by Khalil Gibran -Knots by RD Laing -On The Road by Jack Keroauc -No Exit by Jean Paul Sartre -The Sickness Unto Death by Soren Kierkegaard -Junky & Naked Lunch, both by William S Burroughs -Valley Of The Dolls by Jacqueline Susanne -The Runaway Soul by Harold Brodkey -Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller -The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass -Austerlitz by WG Sebald -Betrayal by Harold Pinter -Invitation To A Beheading by Vladimir Nabokov -The Story Of O by Anne Desclos -Lucie’s Long Voyage by Alina Reyes -120 Days of Sodom by Marquis de Sade -The Traitor by Andre Gorz -The Man Of Feeling by Henry Mackenzie -This Way To The Gas, Ladies And Gentlemen by Tadeusz Borowski -The White Rose by Inge Scholl -It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis -On Revolution by Hannah Arendt -Being There by Jerzy Kozinski -Heliogabalus: or, the Crowned Anarchist by Antonin Artaud -Resuscitation of a Hanged Man by Denis Johnson -Mysteries by Knut Hamsun -We by Yevgeny Zamyatin -Almost Transparent Blue by Ryu Murakami -Venus In Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch -How I Became One Of The Invisible by David Rattray -The Story Of The Eye by Georges Bataille -The Blue Of Noon by Georges Bataille
Also, there's a lot more of my ramblings and writings about the Manics on my other blog @meta-squash under the "manic street preachers" tag, if you're interested. (And I do love talking about them, and Richey especially.)
ETA: I went through all the (text) interviews of the Manics and wrote down every book they mentioned in interviews or lyrics and posted it up here.

Hey so... we're back!! We're back and here with more AUs! We've compiled a list of our major AUs (bc trust us, there's wayyyy more) and decided to share them. Based on public reaction, we might release more information about them (such as fics, drawings, story details, etc.), so make sure to let us know what you think! Alright, enough talking, let's get into the AUs!
Divinities AU
Basically, “Divinities” are the equivalent of gods in this AU and they all live in the Gardens of Heaven.
Characters:
Roman – Divinity of Love (A being with a firey passion and fierce love for his family)
Remus – Divinity of Chaos (A being who thrives off of disruption and disarray)
Logan – Divinity of Knowledge and Heavenly Wrath (A being who granted humanity intelligence and punishes them for their wrongdoings)
Janus – Divinity of Justice (A being worshipped for the purpose of judgement. As justice is blind, so is he)
Virgil – Divinity of Death (A being who is responsible for letting spirits pass on when their time comes)
Patton – Divinity of Life (A being who made all life on Earth and loves his creations dearly)
Summary:
Thomas is a child who dreamed of adventure. After finding out that a family heirloom was actually a key to a hidden temple, he makes it his priority to find that temple and retrieve the treasure within. However, he finds something completely different when he gets there. He finds what seems to be an angel, shackled and magically suppressed. When Thomas frees him, the angel offers him more adventures in exchange for being his cleric and helping him to achieve his goal. Though, Thomas is unaware that this “goal” stems from quite the backstory; one of betrayal and pain.
Swapped AU
Characters:
Roman – Morality (The “younger” brother, childish and clingy. He has an interest in Japanese culture)
Remus – Anxiety (The “older” brother, protective and loving. Somehow he's very expressive, even with a mask on)
Patton – Creativity (A prideful inventor with high ambitions. Opinions of others matter a lot to him)
Janus – Logic (The “parent” of the group, knowledgeable yet ignored. He has an interest in snakes)
Virgil – Deceit (A classic villain “cursed” with 8 eyes. He’s severely insecure about them)
Logan – Intrusive Thoughts (An insane scientist/engineer. He finds people hard to interact with)
Summary:
What would happen if Thomas watched Veggie Tales? And if he already has, then what would happen if he never watched Veggie Tales? This AU is what each side could’ve been if something completely random had happened and shook up their roles. (...totally a shitpost backstory-)
Roman and Remus are still brothers and Patton and Logan have a cousin-type relationship. Janus, Virgil, and Logan are also husbands because… why not <3 love wins
Comfort Crew AU
Characters:
HP- headphones (comfy clothes only, matching black eyeshadow, shaggy black hair, verryy introverted)
Kat- katana (Japanese style clothing, obsessed with studying fighting stances, has long hair he usually keeps in a bun, practices fighting with Roman)
Macey- mace (eccentric clothing, likes fighting but chaotically, surprise attacks Remus to make him feel better, knows Remus really well and helps him on bad days)
Cane- cane/staff (selectively mute, communicates through sign language with Janus and HP, very reserved and quiet, trusts very few people)
Croft- crofters jam (sweetest person you'll ever meet, convinced Logan he likes cuddles, cottagecore aesthetic)
Choc and Chip- cookies (literally Patton's children, they run and jump on him for hugs when Pat's not feeling good, always knows when Pat wants cuddles, transports exclusively through piggy back rides)
Summary:
What happens when the sides favorite objects become personified? Well, they become the comfort crew, of course! Meet HP, Kat, Macey, Cane, Croft, Choc, and Chip. Each comfort is connected to their specific side; HP with Virgil, Kat with Roman, Macey with Remus, Cane with Janus, Croft with Logan, and Choc and Chip with Patton. With these new additions, who knows what shenanigans they’ll get into!
Stanley Parable AU
(Small rundown if you don’t know The Stanley Parable: Stanley is a character created by the Narrator, a protagonist in his story. You play as Stanley. You can choose to follow the Narrator’s story or deviate from it, which gets you a variety of endings. The story is also a game programmed by the Narrator [presumably])
TW: DEREALIZATION, ISOLATION, POTENTIAL SUICIDE
Characters:
Roman – Stanley (A curious protagonist, guided by a voice he can’t hear)
Logan – The Narrator (An inhuman and isolated writer, who’s perplexed by humans)
Remus – Bugged Employee (this was an original role. His code was copy and pasted from Roman, but his model was sloppily changed by Logan. Due to his bugginess, he was able to learn of media outside of the Parable and his behavior became irregular)
Virgil – Employee 432 (Used to be an employee before Roman was “awoken”)
Janus – The Curator (A similarly inhuman being as Logan. He knows the beginnings and ends, some of which not even the creator himself is aware of)
Summary:
Roman, for as long as he’s known, has loved his office job. All he ever did was press buttons, one after the other, but he still loved it nonetheless. That is, until one day when he realized that everyone had disappeared from the building. Where could they have gone? He decided to check the meeting room first, just in case he missed a memo…
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Roman, a lonely writer sat behind a screen. That writer couldn’t wait to build a story for his beloved protagonist.
Siren AU
Characters:
Roman- siren, unintelligent about the human world, loves his partners with all his heart, has a human form
Virgil- Pirate captain, wears a charm to protect him from siren magic, values his crew greatly and takes good care of them, also loves his partners very much
Janus- first mate, had a little sister but lost her, Virgil’s most trusted crew member, loving partner, last added to the relationship, would do anything for his partners
Logan- siren, husband to Remus, lives alone, spent years searching for Remus, watched over Roman
Remus- siren, husband to Logan, fate unknown
Patton- second mate, takes care of the crew in a paternal way, ensures everyone has proper accommodations, is entrusted with the ships functions in the case Virgil and Janus are occupied
Remy- coffee shop owner, partner to Emilie, transgender
Emilie- florist, partner to Remy
Summary:
Roman is a lonely siren, stranded and looking for his next victim. Luckily for him, he finds a ship with a rather dashing captain and first mate. Although his attempt to seduce the captain doesn’t go as planned, Roman finds himself in a loving relationship with his two partners, Virgil and Janus. Although, an unanswered question bubbles below the surface; what happened to Remus?
7 sins AU
TW: THIS AU INCLUDES SUICIDE, BULLYING, VIOLENCE, CANNIBALISM, DEATH, AND SLIGHT/IMPLIED GORE
Characters:
Roman – Pride (Was once a powerful tyrant, and now settles with helping Thomas with his makeup and love life)
Remus – Lust (Was a prince to a corrupt kingdom, serving as “comfort” to the common people. Usually helps with body positivity :))
Logan – Greed (Was an overachieving professor, driven by the need for knowledge. Helps educate Thomas in topics he struggles with)
Virgil – Wrath (Was a blind middle school student, bullied by his classmates. Helps with caution and anxieties)
Janus – Envy (Was an assassin in Russia and killed during a mission. Helps Thomas understand that wanting things is okay)
Patton – Gluttony (Was a cannibal who eventually ate himself. Gruesome, I know. Helps Thomas make sure he's eating enough every day)
Summary:
Thomas is a seemingly average man. After inheriting a house from a relative and moving in, he starts noticing strange events. Perhaps the piano would play itself or the fridge would be more empty than he’d remember it being. Little did he know that his new house was haunted by demons; tortured spirits with untimely and gruesome deaths. Oh and they also help him get his life together, as part of their redemptions. (All sides are sympathetic)
Anaghostical AU
Characters:
Virgil- college student, an anxious mess, relatively lonely
Logan- ghost, caring, supportive, also lonely
Roman- friend of Virgil, attends same college
Remus- friend of Virgil, attended same college but dropped out, training to become a tattoo artist
Janus- Virgil’s father, married to Patton, successful lawyer
Patton- Virgil’s dad, married to Janus, runs a daycare
Summary:
Virgil is a broke college student trying to find his first official apartment. In an odd stroke of luck, he finds a newly vacant apartment for cheap rent near his campus. Upon moving in, he finds out why it was vacant; there’s a ghost! Because of his strict belief in cryptids, demons, monsters, and the like, he decides to befriend the ghost. Will the two fall into forbidden love?

HANANENE HUB SECRET SANTA FICS MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
Happy holidays everyone! This year we did an art/fanfiction secret santa swap on the Hananene Hub, and here is the masterlist of the christmas/winter themed fanfics! They are in alphabetical order according to fic title. Thank you to the amazing writers on this list and for everyone who contributed in the event.
[WARNING: it may be the holidays, but do check the ratings and read the tags for each fic carefully. Not all the fics are fluff. This is still JSHK after all.]
Hope you all enjoy!
Give Me Your Stars to Hold by sincerelyand (me!) for Rapid (@rapidfur) -  If Nene knew one thing, it was how difficult it was being childhood friends with the Yugi Twins.
Honey, Don't Feed Me, I Will Come Back by thebonezone  (@fangirlingforeverz) for sincerelyand (me) - Nene wants to marry a prince more than anything. And what price will she pay for that wish? (Bluebeard AU, Aged Up Characters)
Imperfect by thatsrightdollface (@thatsrightdollface) for hopesartcastle ( @thehopeelias)- When she was young, Aoi Akane had liked the funny-shaped, imperfect sugar cookies best of all.
if anything happens i love you by zileywrites (@muffindounat)  for teafloof (@teafloof) - Amane was a young precious boy with stardust running through his veins and galaxies swirling in his soul, who had been trying in vain to protect himself from the harsh realities of life. [or, three times Yugi Aname felt utterly alone in december after the passing of Tsukasa, and one time he didn’t.]
Lemon and Peach (and you and me under the mistletoe) by Baronesscmd (SweeterThanYourDarkestSin) (@baronesscmd) for HanaNoHanabira -  Tsukasa has a plan. It may involve threatening his brother's little assistant and making Natsuhiko's life a living nightmare, but if Sakura is happy in the end it will all be worth it.
No Place Like (Someone Else's) Home for the Holidays by Hammsters (@uglierdaikon) for Sharkbytez - Yashiro Nene is down on her luck; dumped and alone in a new city where she knows no one, she's preparing to spend her holidays alone for the first time. That is, until the flirtatious bartender at the restaurant where she works makes her an offer she might regret accepting- an invitation to spend Christmas with his family instead.
Once Upon A December (Things I Almost Remember) by banjjakz (@banjjakz) for piyo_nii (@piyo-nii) -  Aoi went missing last Christmas, and the chilling bite of the new year rendered her case cold to the touch. This year, on December first, Nene opens an anonymous Christmas card to find a lock of deep purple hair. Terrified, jaded, and freshly incensed, she teams up with the boy next door to track down her best friend before it's too late.
partly cloudy, chance of snow by sourlemoncandy (@sour-lemon-candy) for Naomi -  Amane is right in at least one respect- his apartment is close to her job, vacant, and perhaps most importantly, he makes the best chocolate chip cookies she's ever tasted.

An Unfilled Grave
The grave had been left open and was now more swamp than mausoleum. Like the others, it was miles away from the path that led walkers to the woods and, if they were lucky, back out again. Here damp moss ruled, embracing every tree and rock in its velvet smother. Fauna had fed well on the flesh and quickly covered in the blessing of April rain; the ecosystem had thrived on the sacrifice.
“It’s only been a month this one,” Dad said as he stepped over logs and weeds, “maybe two.”
He moved through the undergrowth strong and stooped, like an ox that had dragged one too many carts to market. He found the pit quickly and beckoned me over. The hole didn’t look like a grave, more of a puddle nestled under a tree, sloppy and thick with mud. Ferns leaned over the crumbled rim like inquisitive mourners, peering into stagnant water hoping for a better look. There was something in there. Someone in there. I could see- bits of them. Weeds had plaited themselves into floating hair and one barely fleshed hand floated with fingers of frogspawn.
It smelt slippy. That slimy rich rankness so rare you would only smell it dead yourself in a ditch. But not to Dad. He inhaled deeply through chapped nostrils, “Smell that girl!” His voice boomed through the trees, down warrens and through nests. A frog scarpered over his overlarge boot to get away.
“That’s the smell of nature. Real nature. None of that glamping the kids do nowadays, eh?” He elbowed me just lightly enough to keep me from the slick grass that sloped and slid into the small swamp. I hummed noncommittally, partially agreeing, partially trying to keep the bile in my stomach where it didn’t burn too much.
Dad dug into one of his many overall pockets. Older than me but never worn thin. That’s good old-fashioned manufacturing for you, he would say. Out came the trusty old pair of gardening gloves, as brown and cracked as the earth. They were quickly followed by my pair. Bright pink, they had daisies on. He had a sick sense of humour sometimes.
He pulled his gloves slowly over arthritic hands, took off his jacket and with no further ceremony creaked his knees and performed a limping jump into the pit. Black, green slime splashed over his overalls and onto my exposed ankle. It was warm. I focused as best I could on not fainting. Which was not helped in the slightest by Dad passing out a-a “Is that an arm?”
“C’mon Mace, start packing this up. There’s some bags in my jacket, for god’s sake perk up!”
Gloves on and bags retrieved I gritted my teeth and willed my eyes not to fall out of my head and into the meaty sludge. I started bagging up bits. A hefty leg bone stripped clean. A hand with three fingers missing and one very obviously chewed. An ear that was barely anything but black sludge with earrings of emerald snakes and golden bees shoved through it. One of the studs feel onto my lap.
“Don’t forget that!” shouted Dad over the slosh of his arms waving wildly around in the opaque slush. “That’s how you identify them y’know!”
“Is it? Is it how you identify them?” I shoved a finger- no toe- no ear bone into a bag and tied it in a squelchy knot. “Or is just disrupting another crime scene?”
“Oh, Ellis doesn’t mind, she’s just happy we’re finding these sites for her! She’d be lost without us you know. Mace, quick quiz!” He straightened up, or as best he could, waving a mid-sized bone, split like a log down the centre. His grey stubble was dotted so green and brown you could have worn it as camouflage. “How,” He paused for effect, “did this bone break?”
“Murder.” I deadpanned.
“Come on Macey! Have some fun. Theorize.”
“They got axed. By a murderer.”
“Good thinking! It is a clean split; she must be strong my girl.” Dad winked at me as he tossed me the bone, brown and thick as oak.
I hated the way he said that. My Girl. Like he knew her, if the killer was even a her in the first place. He never said Mum’s name like that. He always said “Daisy.” Short and strong. There was love in it, I guess, but that earth bound sensible love. Childhood sweethearts and kids after marriage. Nothing salacious. Nothing suggested. Not like My Girl. The way he said it was as slick as the ditch water she dumped her victims in. Made me retch the same as well.
“Ah-ha! Got it!” He exclaimed. I grimaced. This was always the worst part. “The Piece de la resistance! Isn’t she a beauty?”
She wasn’t. The skull was an empty hut with a collapsed roof. Small scraps of scalp and straggly blonde hair hung like hay, stretching between jigsaw pieces of bone ready to fall into the gaping hole at the back of the skull. The skin had been stripped away but the muscle between the jaw gaped like sad violin strings. Three vertebrae strung with flesh jangled off the end like a child’s rattle. I hated it.
“She always hits from behind.” Said Dad, handing me someone’s head. “Smart one My Girl is, that’s the best way to catch them out!” Someone’s head that still had scraps of brain inside. Someone who wore the most beautiful earrings and had been killed from behind. Someone who rotted in the woods for months until a pair of perverse explorers found them. Someone who was buried with no dignity and dug up with even less. I bagged the skull up.
Dad climbed out of the ditch and wiped his face with a once muscled arm. The dank water found new homes in the lines on his tanned brow. He smiled happily and slapped me on the back, hard. “It’s always nice getting out with you Mace.” I smiled guiltily. “Wish your sister loved her dad this much too. No idea why she doesn’t want to come, she used to love walking these woods when she was younger.”
He sighed, the air let out like a balloon and hung still in the stifled woods. “C’mon then, we better get this to the station.” He grabbed a bag and slung it over his shoulder, only stopping his march to grin back at me, “I cannot wait to see Ellis’s face!”
“God,” I muttered following after him, trailing bags of bodily bits through muddied grass, “I wish you had a better hobby.”

What about 48 for the spotify thing?
Great choice! Now this was a fun one. And long. And sorry someone had to die
48. No Body, No Crime by Taylor Swift ft. HAIM
Macey loved the familiarity that came with every Tuesday night. Even as the air blew a little colder that evening she didn’t mind it. Holding her jacket closer, she headed into the restaurant. The warmth and smells hit her instantly. Then laughter from the back corner hit her ears. Sure enough three girls were already seated at her usual table with one chair remaining.
“Macey!” Cammie greeted as she saw her friend first. “Finally!”
“Hey,” she said, helping herself to the salad and bread for the table. “I miss anything good?”
“Bex was just telling us how she made a grown man cry at work the other day,” Liz said.
“The one that’s been intimidated by you since you were an intern?” Macey asked.
“Yes! He completely deserved it,” Bex launched back into her story and the night was in full swing from there. They ordered, Macey gave an update on her latest project, Cammie recounted her recent trip with Zach, their food came, and then…
“So, Lizzie,” Macey started. “How’s the beau?”
Liz had been laughing and having a good time with them so far. Or so it seemed. But something seemed to be nagging her. Her mind seemed elsewhere. She sighed before picking up her wine glass. “Honestly? He’s acting…different.”
“Different how?” Bex asked.
“Let’s just say it’s not my merlot on his mouth.” Liz watched the other three girls eyes go wide and she knew they understood. She pulled her phone out. “And,” she flashed them her bank statement. “That’s not my jewelry on our joint account.”
Macey took the phone out of her hand to inspect closer. Cammie leaned over her shoulder to see as well.
“What idiot buys another woman jewelry on his joint account with his wife?” Bex asked, incredulously.
“I’m gonna call him out.” Liz stated. Macey passed her the phone back. The three girls promised Liz that she had their support and spent the rest of the evening trying to get their friends mind off it.
The next Tuesday was this first one in months that Macey woke up to feeling horrible. Even on a somewhat bad day Macey could turn it around knowing she’d be seeing her girls that evening. By the time she arrived at Olive Garden for their dinner there were still two empty seats.
“Is Liz in the bathroom?” Macey asked.
“No, she’s not here yet.” Bex said, nonchalantly.
Macey’s brow furrowed. “Huh. I pass her house on the way here. Her car was gone.” The girls all exchange glances. After a little while longer Cammie called Liz’s job and Bex called Liz’s husband.
“They haven’t seen her,” Cammie said.
“She’s not at home either.” Bex added.
By the next morning Liz was officially considered a missing person. Macey, Bex, and Cammie were devoting all of their time to searching for her and cooperating with police to no avail. A few days passed. Macey was driving Cam and Bex home and it was silent in her car. There wasn’t anything to say; the girls were tired and frustrated and sad. As they drove down Liz’s street Cammie and Bex avoided looking at her house. But Macey looked right at, glaring at the front door as if it had personally wronged her. She kept her eyes on it as it started to fade in her rear view.
The next thing Cammie and Bex knew, Macey was making a u-turn in the middle of the street and doubling back as fast as she could.
“Mace! What are you doing?” Cammie called from the backseat. Bex was letting out a string of curses from the passenger seat but Macey ignored them both.
She pulled back up to Liz’s house. “Look,” she said. The girls studied the front of the house and then shared a confused glance. Before they could accuse her of being crazy, Macey pointed to the car in the open garage.
“That’s her husbands car, Macey.” Bex said.
“I know. And those are his beautiful brand new tires.” Bex did a double take and Cammie leaned forward between them to get a closer look. “I don’t know about you guys,” Macey went on. “But getting new tires would be my priority if my wife was missing.”
Bex thought over what Macey was saying as well as the evidence in front of them. She was probably about to point out it wasn’t much when Cammie spoke. “Um, guys. Who’s that?”
“A mistress,” Bex declared. “A fucking mistress. Of course he has one.”
The girls had had a bit of an amateur stake out after what they’d seen the other day. It had taken them less than 72 hours to get photographic proof of Liz’s husbands new arrangement that was now spread out on Cammie’s dining room table.
“And she fucking moved in!” Bex continued, slamming some of the photos down. “He’s not even technically widowed yet and his mistress has moved in. Sleeping in Liz’s bed and everything.”
“How did you get these photos of inside their bedroom?” Cammie asked, studying one.
“You don’t want to know.”
Cammie let it fall out of her hand. “You’re probably right. Come on, we’ve got to pack this up before Zach gets back.” They had agreed it was in everyone’s best interest to keep things between themselves for the time. Bex took care of the evidence they compiled while Cammie went up to Macey. “Hey,” she said, delicately placing a hand on her shoulder. “You okay?”
“Yeah,” but Macey was taking her eyes off the photos. Even as Bex put them in an envelope. “Somebody’s gotta catch him out. He did it.”
“No doubt,” Bex said. She’d had her back turned and couldn’t see the look on Macey’s face or the way she wasn’t really talking to them anymore. But Cammie did. She stared at Macey, trying to get her attention. “But we can’t prove it so we’ve got to be smart about it.”
“Yeah,” Macey agreed. “I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”
“Macey-,”
“Hey, wait up!”
Cammie stopped her on the porch while Bex quickly finished grabbing her things and met her there. “I know this is hard but don’t shut us out,” Bex reminded her. She held open her arms and Macey fell into the hug. She hadn’t realized how drained she’d felt until then.
“You’re right,” she said. She let go of Bex and moved to hug Cammie. When she pulled away Cammie noticed a new light in her eyes. One that reminded her of the old Macey. The Macey that was intimidating to the right people and always beat the boys at arm wrestling and never took no for an answer. “I’ll see you guys later,” she said with a smile.
“See you…” Cammie mumbled as she watched her walk to her car. “You think she’s okay?”
Bex sighed. “I don’t think any of us are okay. Be careful.” The pair hugged and also parted for the evening. But Cammie couldn’t forget the look Macey had given her.
“What did you do?” Cammie asked.
Macey had just closed Cammie’s back door when her friend asked the question. “Hey, slow down,” she said, making her way to Cammie’s fridge. “Who said I did anything? I asked if I could come over tonight.”
“You did. And you came over through my front door a few hours ago. Then you snuck out and snuck back in now.”
“Is it really sneaking if I told you I was doing it?” Macey asked. She settled on the first bottle of wine she found and pulled it out. “Where do you keep your glasses again?”
Cammie rolled her eyes and went to her kitchen. She produced two wine glasses and sat at her dining table with them. Macey followed and poured each of them a generous glass of wine. She then immediately downed half of it. Cammie, on the other hand, just stared at hers. “What happened tonight.”
“You know,” she started, topping off her glass. “It’s a really good thing my daddy made me get a boating license when I was fifteen.”
Cammie narrowed her eyes. The weather had been getting colder and colder. Most people weren’t taking their boats out anymore and within the next few days no one would be.
“And I worked so many odd jobs, remember?” Cammie nodded while Macey sipped her wine. “I’ve cleaned enough houses to know…” she trailed off.
Cammie raised her eyebrows, waiting for the conclusion. “To know what?”
“You know what.”
Cammie studied her friend. When they finally made eye contact it was like a telepathic conversation was taking place. Cammie drew her lips into a tight line and quietly picked up her own wine glass.
A loud knock sounded on the front door while Cammie, Macey, and Zach had breakfast Monday morning.
“I’ll get it,” Macey offered. Upon opening the door she was met by a uniformed officer who introduced himself. When he asked if Cammie was present she conveniently appeared behind Macey.
“That’s me,” she said. “Is there something I can do for you?”
“Yes, ma’am, would you mind answering a few questions for me?” When Cammie nodded he continued. “Could you tell me where you were this Saturday night?”
“Here, in my house,” Cammie answered like it was a ridiculous question.
“Can anyone confirm that?”
“Yes, my boyfriend was also here as was Macey,” she indicated the girl beside her.
“And do they both live here?”
“My boyfriend does but Macey was just staying here for the weekend.”
The officer finally looked at Macey again. The girls could practically see the gears turning in his head. “And your name again Miss?” he asked her.
“Macey McHenry,” she answered, evenly. Her last name held a fair bit of weight but if it meant anything to the officer he didn’t show it.
“Right,” they could hear the suspicion creeping into his voice. Not a good sign. “You we’re both here that night then?”
Before either girl could answer, Zach came to join them. “Hey, Cam. Everything okay?” He looked from his girlfriend to the man at the door and his brow furrowed. “Grant? What are you doing here, man?”
Macey shot Cammie a look but Cammie also looked confused. She looked from Macey to her boyfriend and back to the officer. “This is your friend Grant. Oh my gosh, I totally didn’t recognize him in uniform,” she said, more for Macey’s benefit than anything else.
“No worries, we only met the one time,” Grant assured her. Macey couldn’t help but notice his demeanor change now that Zach had joined them. “Sorry man,” he said, addressing Zach now. “I didn’t realize this was your place. Or your Cammie,” he added as a joke.
“It’s fine. We moved in together not too long ago now,” Zach replied, smiling at her. He then moved Cammie closer to Macey so he stood between the girls and Grant. “What’s up? What brings you over here today?”
Grant took a look around and lowered his voice. “You remember Liz’s husband, right?” Zach nodded. “Well, apparently, he’s missing now, too.”
“What?” Macey was glad this had become a conversation for the boys. Her and Cammie could act but there was no beating Zach’s actual obliviousness.
“He didn’t show up for work and his coworkers thought that was weird. I guess with what happened with Liz they were worried about him mentally. But when we went by the house he was nowhere to be found,” Grant explained.
“Huh. Do you think he just left for a few days with everything going on?” Zach asked.
“I wouldn’t. That kind of thing doesn’t look good,” Grant pointed out. “Besides his car was still there. And so was his new girlfriend.”
Zach raised his eyebrows at the last statement. Cammie and Macey glanced at each other. “Yeah, I think I know her,” Zach said slowly. “Or of her at least. What’s her name? Tina?”
Grant nodded. “We’ve been talking with her. She had requested we check in with his and Liz’s friends,” he gestured to the girls. “Just to see if anyone saw or heard from him the night he didn’t come back to the house.”
Zach sighed. “No, can’t say we did. I came straight home from work and we stayed in that night.”
“Is that right Cammie?”
“Yep,” she said. Grant seemed satisfied with her answer as he looked around her to Macey. “She was with me, dude.”
Grant smiled. “Of course. So to interrupt your morning.”
“Don’t worry about it, man,” Zach said, taking the conversation back over. The girls took their chance at being dismissed and headed back to the dining room. A few moments later they heard Zach and Grant exchange goodbyes. The door shut and they heard Zach approaching. “What was that about?”
Cammie raised an eyebrow. “Did you not hear him? Liz and her husband are missing now.”
“Tragic,” Macey said, taking her seat once again.
“Cammie, I can read between the lines well enough to know Tina thinks you two did something.” Zach said.
“Well then, it’s a good thing we were all here Saturday night,” Cammie took her seat as well.
“They’re not going to look at us for long,” Macey assured.
“How do you know that?”
Macey smiled. “Turns out, his mistress took out a big life insurance policy.”
Cammie looked up at Zach from over the top of her coffee. He could see the same smile on her face. “They think she did, but they can’t prove it.”
“And she thinks I did it but she just. Can’t. Prove. It.” Macey emphasized each word.
“But what if she can?” Zach asked.
“I wouldn’t worry about that,” Macey said, reaching across the table for the newspaper the couple were neglecting. “After all: no body, no crime. Right?”

Your top five (or ten of it’s easier) favorite characters and WHY you like them?
can I just say I LOVE this question? and there are so many more characters I could have used. but off the top of my head, here are my top 10 in no particular order! under a read more because I am long winded
hermione granger (harry potter)
okay, I was raised on hp and it still means a lot to me and shaped me into the person I am today, regardless of what the stupid author says. hermione was one of the first characters who really embraced and celebrated her smarts that I interacted with and I have ALWAYS wanted to be like her and aspired to be her. I’ve been hermione countless times for halloween and she was the first character I cosplayed. I love her and for that reason, she’s a fave
luna lovegood (harry potter)
the other hp character. because luna has always been unapologetically herself and didn’t care what others thought of her. it was luna who made me realize that I’m 100% a ravenclaw and her creativity and the way she sees the world has always amazed me and now I see or think of her and feel at home
percy jackson (percy jackson & the olympians)
I love percy so much because he is so freaking funny and also so damn loyal to his friends. his loyalty, the way he sticks by his friends, and the strength he finds from his friends has always been something I love and admire. not to mention, I just love his narration and how badass he is without screaming it from the rooftops
belle (beauty and the beast)
belle has always been my favorite disney princess. whether it was because of her brown hair (which didn’t actually match mine until I was seven but I digress) or her love of books that matched mine, I always loved her and always will. her sense of adventure, fairness, imagination, and determination keeps her cemented as my favorite
macey mchenry (gallagher girls)
macey is a feminine girl with a “couldn’t care less” attitude when she comes to gallagher. by the end of the series, she’s a fully fledged badass who cares about her friends and the people she loves. macey still enjoys makeup and traditionally “girly” things but now with the love and support of her friends, she’s become more and she is self confident in a healthier way. macey’s growth is amazing and it makes her one of my favorite characters in the series. she isn’t born into this business, she didn’t start at gallagher at 12 like everyone else, but with support and nurture and people paying attention to her she can do so much awesome stuff. and I love that so much.
auden west (along for the ride)
along for the ride is my favorite sarah dessen book and a large part of this is auden. shockingly, she’s another bookish girl who grew up quickly, is incredibly smart, and lacks social skills. I have a pattern and type, I know. but I met auden when I was in high school and seeing how auden was able to merge two parts of her life, the book smart overachiever and the social life she started to gain in colby with eli, gave me hope and was so fun to watch auden experience her childhood and see how people can change right as she finished high school. I’m probably explaining this poorly, but auden’s growth and transformation and her transition to college has given me so much hope and her story will always have a special place in my heart.
phillipe de clermont (all souls trilogy)
a true family man, a planner, a strategist, a hilarious man. phillipe is here because I just love him so much. I don’t see myself in him, I only tangentially relate to him in that family means a lot to me, but I love this man as a character and he will always be one of my favorites in the all souls world
samwise gamgee (lord of the rings)
samwise gamgee is just the best man. he wants to live in the shire, marry rosie cotton, and take care of a garden. what a life, what a man. samwise is just so great and arguably, the true hero of lotr. frodo is great and definitely the hero, but we all know frodo doesn’t destroy the ring without sam. sam’s loyalty and how much he cares about frodo is just the best and I love him SO MUCH
nathan scott (one tree hill)
local man simps for his wife. that is nathan scott from mid s1-end of the show. nathan loves haley and once he realizes he actually likes her, he changes so much. a large part nathan makes this list is because of his AMAZING character growth and how much it is organic and makes sense and it sticks. he doesn’t fake anything just to get with haley, he really does change and become a better man and I love it so much. and hes just…he’s got a good head on his shoulders and he’s amazing. and he’s proof that who your parents are or how they act doesn’t necessarily mean you will be like them. nathan is one of the best people despite the tire fires his parents are. and I could go on and on about this man and why he is one of the best people in the world. nathan scott is the best scott. always and forever.
brooke davis (one tree hill)
for how shitty the one tree hill show runners were, they wrote two great characters in brooke and nathan. brooke goes from bitchy cheerleader to amazing woman with true depth, morals, and heart. she’s incredible and so strong and takes zero shit from anyone. brooke knows who she is and she lives her life the way she wants to, she doesn’t care what others say. she doesn’t care what is being done in the fashion industry, she will not have size zero models. she is amazing and incredible and filled with so much depth and love and humor and I love her so much. she’s amazing.
ahhhhhh thank you so much for this question!!!!! I loved this!!!
